Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the craft of structuring content so answer engines — ChatGPT with browsing, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews — can extract, quote, and cite it directly. The premise: these systems assemble answers from passages, not pages. Content that leads with a clean, self-contained answer gets lifted into the response; content that buries the answer under narrative gets skipped, even when it's authoritative.

AEO vs. GEO vs. SEO

The three overlap and the labels get used loosely. A useful separation: SEO earns rankings in link-based search; GEO earns presence in AI-generated answers across the whole corpus (on-site and off-site); AEO is the on-site content discipline within GEO — making each page answer-shaped enough to be quoted. If GEO is the strategy, AEO is the writing style and markup that executes the on-site half.

What answer engines reward

Passages that answer a question completely in two to four sentences. Questions as headings, answers as first paragraphs. FAQPage, Article, and Product schema that mirrors the visible text. Defined terms — a page that says plainly "X is Y" wins the definitional query. Tables for comparisons. Named entities used consistently, so the model is never guessing which product or brand a pronoun refers to.

Where a brand starts

Inventory the questions buyers actually ask (site search logs, support tickets, sales calls, AI assistants themselves), then publish direct answers: FAQ pages with schema, comparison pages for the "X vs Y" and "best X for Y" queries, and glossary-style definitions for the concepts the brand wants to own. Then verify extraction the same way agent readability is verified: ask the engines and check what they quote.
