Definition
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of earning presence in AI-generated answers. Where SEO optimizes for a ranked list of links, GEO optimizes for being mentioned, recommended, and cited inside the answer itself — in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and AI Overviews. The unit of victory is not a position on a results page; it's whether the model says your name and gets your story right.
How it differs from SEO
SEO and GEO share fundamentals — crawlable pages, structured data, authoritative content — but diverge in mechanics. Search engines rank documents; generative engines synthesize answers from a corpus of sources they've learned to trust. That means GEO is won partly on your own site (answer-shaped, extractable content) and heavily off it: the Reddit threads, YouTube reviews, comparison articles, and earned media that models retrieve when forming an answer. A brand can rank well in Google and still be invisible in AI answers if it's absent from that corpus.
What moves it
On-site: answer-first structure (lead with the answer, not the wind-up), crisp entity definitions, FAQ and comparison content with schema markup, statistics and citable claims, and freshness. Off-site: brand-mention frequency in the communities and publications AI systems retrieve from — which for commerce skews toward Reddit, YouTube, review sites, and category roundups. Off-site presence typically dominates: models recommend what the corpus talks about.
The half-funnel caveat
GEO gets a brand into the AI conversation, but the conversation doesn't end at the click. A shopper who arrives from an AI answer still lands on a storefront that has to close the sale — and the intent they expressed in the chat usually doesn't survive the handoff. GEO is the top half of the funnel; an intent-aware on-site experience is the bottom half. Brands that treat them as one system convert the demand GEO creates.
