Definition
Buyer Agent
An AI agent that shops on a consumer's behalf — discovering products, comparing options, and increasingly completing checkout — loyal to the shopper, not to any store.
Definition
A buyer agent is an AI agent that acts for the consumer in a shopping journey: it takes a goal ("a waterproof duffel under $150 that ships by Friday"), discovers candidate products across stores, compares them against the shopper's constraints and preferences, and increasingly carries the transaction through checkout with standing instructions and spending limits. ChatGPT's shopping mode, Google's AI Mode and Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and marketplace assistants like Amazon's Rufus all play this role today. The defining property is allegiance: a buyer agent works for the person, not for any brand it evaluates.
Why it matters
A growing share of product discovery now happens inside agent conversations the brand never sees. The buyer agent reads whatever it can retrieve about a store — structured data, policies, reviews, protocol manifests — forms an answer, and presents a shortlist. The brand either survives that filter or it doesn't, and no analytics tool shows the conversations it lost. For merchants, buyer agents are simultaneously a new distribution channel and a new gatekeeper: they route demand, but only toward stores they can read and trust.
How buyer agents read a store
Buyer agents don't experience design; they read data. The well-behaved ones fetch a store's Universal Commerce Protocol manifest at /.well-known/ucp to learn what the store supports, pull structured catalog data and product schema, respect robots.txt, and quote policies from the pages that state them. Where structure is missing they fall back to scraping and inference — which is where wrong prices, wrong variants, and invented policies enter the answer. A store that wants to be represented accurately gives agents structure instead of leaving them to guess.
The counterpart
The buyer agent's mirror image is the brand agent — the intelligence that works for the seller. As consumers delegate more of the journey to buyer agents, the brands that field a capable sell-side agent (deep catalog knowledge, correct policies, real voice) are the ones that convert the demand buyer agents route. The end state most protocol work assumes is agent-to-agent commerce: a buyer agent and a brand agent negotiating a transaction over open standards.
