Seller Agent

The selling party in agent-to-agent commerce: an AI agent that represents a brand, merchant, or marketplace seller to shoppers and their buyer agents.

Definition

A seller agent is an AI agent that sells — the sell-side party in an agentic transaction. When a consumer's buyer agent goes shopping, the seller agent is what it deals with: the intelligence that presents the catalog, answers questions about products and policies, negotiates what the transaction supports, and completes the sale. The term is the most general of the sell-side family; a brand agent and a merchant agent are both seller agents.

In agent-to-agent commerce

Open protocols are making the buyer-agent-to-seller-agent handshake concrete. A seller publishes a Universal Commerce Protocol manifest declaring its services and capabilities; a buyer agent discovers it, computes what both sides support, and transacts — with payment standards like the Agent Payments Protocol handling authorization, and escalation paths handing control back to humans when a step needs judgment. In that mesh, the seller agent is not a chatbot bolted onto a website; it is the store, as far as the buying agent is concerned.

The terminology map

Three near-synonyms describe sell-side agents, each borrowed from a different corner of commerce. "Seller agent" comes from marketplaces, where the selling party may be one of thousands of sellers on a platform. "Merchant agent" comes from retail platforms and often includes operational automation. "Brand agent" comes from D2C, where the agent must carry identity and voice, not just inventory. The distinctions matter less than the direction: every serious seller ends up needing an agent, whatever their platform calls it.

What separates a good one

Four things. Catalog depth: it knows variants, constraints, and compatibility, not just titles and prices. Groundedness: every claim traces to real data — a seller agent that fabricates an answer poisons trust with both shoppers and buyer agents. Policy accuracy: shipping, returns, and guarantees quoted exactly as written. And voice: for brands especially, the agent sells the way the brand would, because in agentic commerce the conversation is the storefront.
